Oye Happy's story

Oye Happy is an Indian ecommerce company that specializes in making one-of-a-kind, customized gifts that add a personalized touch to memorable occasions. Their team is referred to as happiness scientists, who work with a simple goal: to make gifting fun again.

The best thing about Oye Happy is that they don’t source toys and decorative items from wholesellers. Instead, they create gift ideas from scratch, so they end up being unique. Oye Happy has created over 500 unique gift ideas, and their innovative gifting method has earned them the love and commitment of over 135,000 consumers across India. They won the prestigious Tissot Innovation Award in 2018, and the Top 10 Retailer of the Year Award in 2018. They were also recently featured on Shark Tank India.

The challenge

In 2017, Oye Happy was an 8-10 member team with relatively small operations that processed between 20 and 30 orders per day. From there, the company grew annually and their brand value has significantly increased.

All the processes, including designing and assembly line manufacturing, are carried out in-house. But, as their company grew, they found that they needed a solution that included comprehensive operations and back-end processes. They also wanted to ensure that customers were not negatively impacted and that all quality checkpoints were strictly adhered to.

As Oye Happy continued to grow, the need for a robust order management system became increasingly evident. They were using WooCommerce to manage their operations initially, and while it served as a reliable foundation for Oye Happy's operations, the company found itself facing limitations in terms of flexibility. As the business expanded and diversified, the need for a platform that could seamlessly evolve with their dynamic requirements became apparent.

What a typical day at Oye Happy looks like

With the order management application, once an order is received on their Shopify front end, it immediately hits the back end. So step one is processing the order and ensuring that all customization details have been received from the customer. Step two is assigning a dispatch date to the orders, and the entire operation functions based on the dispatch date.

The design of these personalized gifts takes place on a separate screen, known as the designer screen. The designer looks at the various gifts that the buyer has ordered and the various templates and then designs the gifts accordingly.

The next step is when the actual gift is made and sent for quality checks, where there are checkboxes for all the items and what has to be checked in different products. Once those checkboxes are clicked and the quality check is approved, only then can it move to the final screen—the packing screen.

The packing screen is where the employee can check if the gift is correct, if it has all the items in it, and if the final packing is done. On completion of all the above steps, it will then be pushed for delivery.

The challenge

Proactiveness: Although Oye Happy's early ecommerce efforts were built on WooCommerce, the company faced difficulties with proactive selling. As the personalized gifting market evolved quickly, Oye Happy realized that their old platform was not as responsive and anticipatory as needed. To preserve their position as industry leaders, Oye Happy required a platform that would not only fit current needs but also proactively adapt to emerging trends.

"WooCommerce definitely was not proactive enough, and since operations is a very important division of the company, if it's down even for a few hours a day, we will be lost on orders and will not be able to complete the dispatch on time. Being a gifting company, we cannot take such a big risk that customers won't get their gifts on time."

Bulk order processing: Bulk order processing is critical to Oye Happy's operations, particularly given the nature of personalized gifting. As the demand for unique and personalized gifts continued to rise, their existing system struggled to keep up with the volume and complexities of processing large orders efficiently.

Flexibility & customization: While the prior order management system was functional, it didn't provide any customization options. Also, the challenges posed by an inflexible order management app became apparent as Oye Happy expanded its offerings and faced the evolving demands of the personalized gifting industry.

Enter Zoho Creator.

Zoho Creator, a low-code platform that seamlessly integrates flexibility, customization, and efficiency, emerged as the key to unlocking operational excellence and overcoming roadblocks.

The solution

"We were looking for better options, which is when we came across the Zoho Creator platform. With Zoho Creator, lots of our tasks have been streamlined and simplified. Even better, we were able to customize it based on our requirements because it's a low-code platform."

- Kunal Agarwal,COO, Oye Happy

Leveraging the capabilities of Zoho Creator, Oye Happy worked hand-in-hand with ITK Solutions, a Zoho Partner, to build a complete operation system.

"The best part here is that ITK, who were really helpful in this, were able to replicate the functionalities of the WooCommerce platform the way we wanted them. We were able to build a very good replica of our old system on Zoho Creator, but with better features."

- Kunal Agarwal,COO, Oye Happy

Their employees were using a specific channel earlier, and the whole team was accustomed to that channel—and making the transition to new software is always tedious, especially in operations, since people are used to certain processes and screens.

"In our case, Oye Happy is a gifting company, and it's completely seasonal. So, in high seasons, we're probably saving around two hours per day, which is huge. We've seen such a crazy impact with this single feature of bulk order processing."

Oye Happy's experience with ITK

"There has been great support from the ITK Team. Their way of ideating, testing, implementing, and executing all the tasks is seamless, and they try to make sure that all the tasks are made live only after proper testing. They also help us with improving and building solutions according to our requirements. Their resolution time for issues is low, and they always make sure that our orders/dispatches are not hampered in any way. For us, we've never had a tech team like ITK."

The benefits

Making bulk order processing a breeze

"We're able to easily process bulk orders using our new order management system built on Zoho Creator. Even if we have 100 units of one single product, we can generate all 100 addresses at once. This immediately shifted the whole efficiency game so much for us."

- Kunal Agarwal,COO, Oye Happy

Room for customization

"With Zoho Creator, there is always room for customization, and a lot of control lies with us. But with our old system, for every small issue, for example, even the PIN code serviceability kept changing on a fortnightly or monthly basis among the delivery companies, so we had to email them and then get it updated on the platform. But with Zoho Creator, even for smaller things like that, we were able to add or delete inputs from one page."

- Kunal Agarwal,COO, Oye Happy

Enhancing operational efficiency

"In our platform, there's a button called trigger order form, which we trigger, and the customer is able to fill out the order form after placing an order. Initially, it was only at the time of placing the order that the customer could fill out these details, but with the new app, the customer can now fill out the order form even after they order, maybe a day or two days later, increasing efficiency."

- Kunal Agarwal,COO, Oye Happy

Looking forward

"Currently, we're running complete operations on Zoho Creator for our B2C platforms. In the near future, maybe in the next two to three months, we're planning to launch a B2B website and different business channels as well. So we definitely plan to use Creator to handle more of our operations in the future."
